Being a good vegetable gardener involves knowing all you can about the plants that you are growing.
Classification of Vegetables
One of the easiest way to learn more about vegetables is to know which category they belong to.
Vegetables in each category have similar needs in terms of sunlight, water, and temperature. They are also usually affected by the same types of pests and diseases. This means that if you are a gardener who is familiar with growing one type of vegetable in each category, you’ll find it easier to grow and care for other vegetables in the same category.
Vegetables can be categorized based on quite a few different factors:
- Plant family
- Edible part/s of vegetable plants
- Growing season (warm-season & cold-season vegetables)
- Root depth
- Cold hardiness
- Vegetables and herbs that grow in sandy soil
